ATMC filling with fledgling businesses.
This is just a different kind of manufacturing then what they are used to-textile manufacturing skills are skills that are transferable.’ With South Carolina competing with Massachusetts in the renewable energy field, Petrovic said recently unveiled plans like Fall River Energy Enterprise and the Southcoast BioPark will help attract more alternate energy businesses to the state. He said Fall River isn”t that much different of a place than Lowell, where he was the business development director for UMass Lowell. More than ten years ago with Lowell playing the part of a rundown mill town, the city converted itself into biotechnology center that continues to pay dividends in jobs, grants and exposure. ‘It was a 14 year vision, but companies see this success and they decide to come here,’ said Petrovic.more

Credit card overhaul coming

Americans with a credit card will see sweeping changes in the market, with limits on sudden hikes in interest rates that drive consumers deeper into debt.

The changes will revolutionize the market by restricting when and how a card company can raise an individual”s interest rate, who can receive a card and how much time people are given to pay the bills. The new rules - which go into effect in nine months - will protect debt-ridden consumers from many of the surprise charges common in the industry, such as over-the-limit fees and costs for paying a bill by phone.more

Walking down memory lane

Walking down memory lane.
Organizations such as ICIM, HCL, DCM, ECIL etc came in to fill the void and so began the saga of the IT manufacturing industry in the country. In 1982 was an era characterized by proprietary hardware and operating systems. Prices were ridiculously high and vendors pushed anything and everything to the customer from desktop calculators to punch card machines to 128 K mini computers. An 8-bit machine would cost as high as Rs eight lakh. This continued until about 1983.

The first PC was launched at CSI-Delhi in March 1985 by Minicomp. The Government announced the setting up of NICNET to provide connectivity between the centre and the states.

Then came 1987-88 where technology occupied the front seat and new products and trends began to hit the market rapidly. Networking and LANs came into being.more

Nightcaps performing for 50th anniversary

Nightcaps performing for 50th anniversary.
‘My grandchildren were in awe,’ said Shine, now 69 and retired as a furniture manufacturing representative.

After a half-century, Shine is still the Nightcaps” lead singer, and Haufler still plays guitar.

Dennis Mills has been playing bass for the Nightcaps since 1962 and his brother, Lenny, has been on rhythm guitar since 1969. The newest member, drummer Mark Minton, has been with the band for the past dozen years.

The Nightcaps still play 10 to 20 events a year, mostly private parties and class reunions – especially those from the classes of “58 through “66.

The Nightcaps never quite hit the big time, but they came close. While playing the local scene, a Dallas businessman named Tom Brown heard them play and asked if they wanted to cut a record. He tried to arrange a deal with RCA Victor, based on the strength of ‘Wine, Wine, Wine’ and ‘Thunderbird,’ another catchy song written by Shine during another Jesuit study hall.more

Design, manufacturing, marketing defects lead to product liability

Design, manufacturing, marketing defects lead to product liability.
Explaining products defects, the Florida injury lawyers say, ‘Products become defective due to manufacturing fault or due to problems with product designs or products might not carry proper warning of use, thus injuring people who use such products.’

Manufacturers have a duty to design and manufacture products that are safe for their consumers to use. They are also required to alert consumers of any potential problems related to their product. When a manufacturer creates an unsafe product, or when it fails to warn consumers that its products might be dangerous, people may suffer as a result.

The responsible parties may include the manufacturer of component parts, an assembling manufacturer, the wholesaler, and the retail store owner. Any of these companies and individuals could be responsible for a dangerous product and lack of notification.more

EconPop Series (1): A Tale of Two Recessions, or Will the Dead Cat.
Same contrast with manufacturing and government jobs. If employment shrinkage had been distributed equally 467,980 manufacturing jobs would have been lost. In reality over a million jobs disappeared in this sector. In contrast, if employment shrinkage had been distributed equally 758,984 government jobs would have been lost across the country. In reality this sector gained 487,900 jobs.

Will the Dead Cat Bounce?

What”s the story here?

The employment situation is actually much worse than it appears. The impact of the recession on unemployment is being moderated by government spending. The problem is that much of the money being spent is being pissed away into sectors that don”t need.
